A Documentary - The Toxic School in China
Posted by Harry Jiang on 02/14/2017 - 05:27

As a follow-up to my previous article concerning the Changzhou Foreign Languages School controversy, in which hundreds of students' health are affected by toxic waste from a nearby chemical plant, I created the documentary that critically evaluates parents', students', teachers', as well as government officials' response to this incident. This video is now on YouTube. Please click on the links below to view my work:

A protest of incredible and historical scale is happening near Cannonball, North Dakota. Thousands of Native Americans have gathered at the Standing Rock preservation in camps to protest the building of the $4 billion Bakken Pipeline. Considered the largest gathering in over a 100 years, this one includes members from 280 indigenous tribes. They have travelled from all across America to protest the building of the oil pipeline which will run through Dakota, crossing hundreds of waterways down to the Midwest. The pipeline will also weave its way through many sacred sites, and any one... Read More

In a recently published report by Amnesty International, it has been discovered that at least 17,723 people have died in custody in Syrian prisons since March 2011. This, the article states, is around “300 deaths per month” - not counting the much larger reality of all those people who have been abducted or are “missing”.

Reports of torture in the Saydnaya Military Prison vary from instances of prisoners being kept in cells with dead bodies, or detained in cells where women were raped right next to them by armed guards. Personal accounts of survivors fill the article with details... Read More

Poland's Constitutional Crisis and Why It Matters
Posted by Aleksandra Maczka on 08/18/2016 - 11:14

Within merely 26 years, Poland managed to break away from the Soviet Union, join the EU and NATO and even tranform its economy from totally centrally controlled to competetive, capitalist one. With absolute trust in 'the Western friends' the country implemented all the necessary (and painful) political and economic reforms, pursuing the ideal at an amazing speed. That velocity however, never truly allowed cultural and political understanding to keep up with the changes.

In a way, Poland seems to be mirroring the undeniable rise of the populist right-wing politics of the West but in... Read More

Politicians all over the world love using human rights as an undefeatable argument and ultimate reason that can justify even the most daring and risky political actions. If done ‘in the name of defending human rights’ everything seems to necessarily be correct or at least done with ‘best of intentions’ and therefore not... Read More

Ghina Wadi, a nine-year old girl from Madaya, Syria, was shot in the leg while walking with her sister to bring medicine to her mother. Because the surgery she needed was not available in the beseiged town, locals pleaded the government for Ghina to be allowed to leave, but she was not allowed to do so. Fortunately, a social media campaign supported by Amnesty International as well as the United Nations with the hastag #SaveGhina was enough to allow volunteers to carry her in a stretcher to a hospital where her leg could be treated. Thousands of people like her are living in beseiged areas... Read More

Venezuela re-opens borders amid economic crisis
Posted by Luis Perez on 08/16/2016 - 21:49

The Venezulan president has reopened the borders between Venezuela and Colombia, to supplement the needs of its citizens who can no longer buy food and clothing because of the recent economic crisis. The border was closed prior to this because of several cases of smugling a variety of items such as drugs and weapons, and although some have been crossing the border through illegal means, such as going under the radar and bribery, the president felt that opening the border would help a lot more people. The people traveled as far as hundreds of miles in order to cross the border, just to buy... Venezuela's Crisis: Feed them cake, Mr. President?
Posted by Cristian Martinez Herrera on 08/16/2016 - 01:15

The country only has $11.9 billion in 2016 reserves left in it central bank. In 2011 before, they had $30 billion. Experts predict they only have up two years before the country is out of money, and that means the country will only continue to damage its own human dignity. .

Despite sitting on top of one of the world’s largest oil reserves, it is unlikely Venezuela will be able to covers its own debt to lenders, because of a 13 year old low in oil prices. Lenders include China, oil companies, importers and bondholders, among others.

Because of... Read More

Nauru: Australia's asylum seeker prison
Posted by ejbentley on 08/12/2016 - 19:52

“Assaults, sexual abuse, self-harm, inhuman conditions – over 2,000 newly leaked reports paint a sordid picture of Australia’s offshore refugee detention operations on the Pacific island of Nauru.” By forcibly transferring refugees and people seeking asylum to Nauru, detaining them for prolonged periods in inhuman conditions, denying them appropriate medical care, and in other ways structuring its operations so that many experience a serious degradation of their mental health, the Australian government has violated the rights to be free from torture and other ill-treatment, and from...
